  is the ultimate wine tours destination for Super Tuscan wine lovers. “Super Tuscan” is a term used to describe red wines from Tuscany that may include the use of non-indigenous grapes, particularly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Although an extraordinary number of wines claim to be “the first Super Tuscan,” most would agree that this credit belongs to Sassicaia, the brainchild of marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon at his Tenuta San Guido estate in Bolgheri back in 1944. In former times, the producers had to classify these wines as table wines because they did not conform to the DOC regulations for Chianti wine. Bolgheri became an internationally known region following an event in 1974 arranged by Decanter where a 6-year-old Sassicaia won over an assortment of Bordeaux wines. After the huge success of these "table wines" (such us Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto, and Solaia) all over the world , the authorities allocated them their own denominations, namely Bolgheri DOC and Sassicaia DOC.
